The city was founded in 1829 by Don Francisco Aguilar, and his first name was Villa Ituzaingó. In 1907, it was renamed Punta del Este. In the summer season, the city receives more than 200 000 visitors.

Colonia del Sacramento: a city full of history heritage of humanity

The city of Colonia del Sacramento was declared a World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1680. It is a place where tourists have access to all kinds of emotions and entertainment.

It has beautiful colonial houses, courtyards, plazas artisans, churches, ruins and walls of convents, museums and even stone walkways that make the city unique. Also visit the famous San Carlos real, and the bullring Nicolas Mianovich that began operations in 1910, and was the most famous bullfighters in Spain.

Colonia del Sacramento is today one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Uruguay, receiving thousands of visitors every year. The location of the city is privileged to be at 1hr by boat from Buenos Aires, and 2 hours drive from tourist Montevideo. The tourist offer includes knowing the historical part of the city, and the beaches of Rio de la Plata.

Traces of the past history of the capital are some of the most important tourist attractions. The Independence Square, the largest in the country, also has one of the gates of the ancient wall that surrounded the city during the colonial period.
